I'm writing in response to one of the ARPs reviewed in class that I stumbled upon, Facebook the New Generation. Although this research paper is a bit on the short side, it really gives a good look into the world of Facebook. For whatever real reason, college studnets (unfortunately I am guilty as well) can spend hours upon hours creeping around on the Facebook's of their friends, family members, classmates, strangers even. This is a great way to keep in contact, very easy and free, but also a horrible way to spend valuable study time. My procrastination has really come out in result of Facebook, seeing as though it is definitely the most visited website on my web browser. Some additions this paper could have had was the whole privacy issue with Facebook and how some underaged people put pictures of them doing very illegal things on Facebook for the world to see. What about Facebook is so convincing to think that this is okay? Who knows, maybe it is to show everyone else that you "know how to have a good time." Also, they could have added more history on Facebook and it's creater, Mark Zuckerberg. Somewhere I read that it was originally called Facemash and people were linked to what animals they looked like (he dubbed his ex-girlfriend a pig). Quite a way to redeem yourself and make one of the most popular websites! All in all, the more I think about Facebook the funnier it seems to me. Some website made up as a joke that people find it okay to confide in and post some of their silliest moments for the world to see just for entertainment. Speaking of silly moments for entertainment, don't even get me started on how strange some of the people on YouTube are. Or even the fake people on MySpace. When the phase of internet self-exploitation is over, I wonder what the next fad will be.
